Cracks in the Cave
“For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro’ narrow chinks of his cavern.”
William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790)
In a time when algorithms shape our behavior, polarization narrows our view, and social systems condition our perception, it seems humanity has once again “shut itself in” just as William Blake foresaw in the 18th century.
Cracks in the Cave brings together contemporary artists who expose and open these “chinks of the cavern.” Their work doesn’t offer straightforward answers, but rather invites us to look, feel, and experience doubt.
Like Blake, they critique the limited worldview shaped by social conventions, technological narrowing, and cultural codes. Through fashion, the body, color, and performativity, they use imagination as a social force – not as an escape, but as a means of transformation and connection.
Cracks in the Cave is curated by Anya Janssen and Majke Hüsstege.
