Unveiling Growing Dreams

The Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Board of Trustees of the R.S.G. Reunion Foundation invite you to the unveiling of the sculpture titled “Growing Dreams” by Rotterdam visual artist Silvia B. The unveiling will take place on Thursday, January 29th, at 3:00 PM in Park Noord on the Woudestein campus.

The statue is a gift from the RSG Reunion Foundation to EUR on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Rotterdam Student Society (RSG), founded on November 1, 1921. The EUR Executive Board gratefully accepted the gift. The statue is an enrichment for the EUR Art Collection and for the Woudestein campus. “Growing Dreams” perfectly expresses what the University stands for.

The Foundation selected Silvia B.’s design because it aligns with the RSG’s motto, “Towards More Growth and Prosperity.” The tree, from which a diverse array of well-shod legs grow, represents the roots of the diverse group of students at the university, the college, and within the student association. On this secure foundation, they and their dreams can grow until they each venture out into the world in all directions, but never forget their shared roots.

History of designs for this commission:

Junior, 2023, 4th design, rooftop of RSG building, Maasboulevard
Junior, 2022, 3rd design, in grass between plane trees, Groenendaal
Junior, 2022, 2nd design, in front of the RSG building, Haringvliet, south side
Junior, 2021, original design between 4 senior plane trees, Haringvliet north side

A young tree grows up in the middle of four impressive seniors. The adults have pushed up the pavement with their mighty roots around the youngster who has intertwined its skinny roots with the adult ones. The junior is still in the bud, like the student who needs to graduate before blossoming. The senior trees provide protection and nourishing to the junior, as do the senior students and alumni of the R.S.G. for their young members.
